The Client
Selfridges has been a staple store on the London high street since their doors opened on Oxford Street in 1909. It is considered by most as more than just a shop, complete with restaurants, bars, a cinema, and numerous brands selling their products inside. In addition to the staple London store, Selfridges have stores in Manchester Exchange, the Trafford Centre, and Birmingham.
Selfridges are known for being home to some of the most sought-after brands and products across fashion, homeware, beauty, and food, as well as extravagant displays and enticing Christmas lights, only getting more impressive year after year.
The Brief
Heightsafe have conducted the compliance testing for all four Selfridges locations for years; with our teams attending annually to inspect, test and tag all work at height and access systems, flagpoles, and merchandising eyebolts.
There are multiple work at height systems such as access ladders, safety lines, walkways and guardrail systems that are utilised day-in, day-out by facilities maintenance and cleaning staff. Much of the work at height systems are to the exterior of the department store, such as on the roof space and around the Queen of Time statue; as well as interior access systems for installing, cleaning, and maintaining displays.
Additionally, there are merchandising hooks and eyebolts that require annual testing, in addition to hanging signs, chandeliers, and other suspended light features.
The Solution
Heightsafe were able to provide a comprehensive plan for re-testing at each of the four sites, covering all assets and carrying out any remedial work required to bring old or damaged systems up to date.
Selfridges is bustling with customers year-round – even more so at Christmas time and so it is imperative that their maintenance staff can carrying out cleaning and repairs efficiently in the background; as well as allowing for smooth transitions of their many visual merchandising displays in their various departments around the store.
The Outcome
Selfridges can provide a high-quality service to the public whilst confident in the knowledge that all their work at height systems are safe to use and in good repair. They can replace and maintain displays knowing that the eyebolts and hooks have been inspected, tested, and tagged.
