The Client

Based in the heart of Kent, Convert Energy is a leading renewable energy design and project management company. Working across a wide range of sustainable technologies, they provide fully tailored solutions for both residential and commercial clients.

With years of experience driving innovation in the renewable energy sector—and a belief that every project is unique—their specialist team approaches each scheme on an individual basis. Convert Energy’s directors have served on the boards of multiple technology companies, contributing to several award-winning renewable energy designs and installations.

The Brief

Heightsafe has collaborated with Convert Energy on numerous previous projects, including an Edge Protection installation for a London primary school. For this scheme, Convert Energy required a safe access solution to support the installation of Photovoltaic (PV) Panels at Ramsgate Leisure Centre.

Given the need for safe working at height both during installation and for future maintenance, a robust Collective Roof Edge Protection and Walkway system was essential. The Leisure Centre’s roof comprises a trapezoidal metal deck, with the steepest section reaching a pitch of 19°. This presented a design challenge that our in-house Estimating Team addressed by modelling the system to suit the varying roof levels and perimeter profiles.

The Solution

Heightsafe designed a comprehensive Roof Access System, comprising of a Walkway System and Collective Handrail, and an Access Ladder for entry to roof level. All systems were rivet-fixed directly to the roof sheets, ensuring exceptional stability and long-term performance.

As the roof pitch varies around the perimeter—including a curved section at 19°—our Walkway and Kee Guard Guardrail were engineered to step up and down accordingly. This ensured a consistent, level walking surface and effective fall protection across all roof areas.

Our on-site engineers installed around 150m of Guardrail and Walkway Systems to the roof area, in accordance with BS EN 13374 and BS EN 516 respectively.

The Outcome

The completed system provides a safe, slip-resistant, and clearly defined access route across the entire roof. Convert Energy’s team were able to complete their Solar PV installation efficiently and safely, with full collective protection in place throughout.

The installed solution also delivers long-term safety benefits, granting the end client safe ongoing access for maintenance of the solar panels and wider roof areas—fully compliant with Working at Height Regulations.
