The Client
Fortis Group Holdings are one of the fastest growing development companies in the UK. Since their inception in 2012 they have built an impressive portfolio and established themselves at the forefront of the industry. They pride themselves on setting the standards for residential and student accommodation throughout the UK.
The Northhill Apartment building is the fourth phase of the Fortis Quay development, situated in the heart of Salford Quays. The Northhill development includes 290 residential apartments spread over a 27-storey tower.
The Brief
Heightsafe were contacted by the client to design, supply, and install a complete Edge Protection solution, Safety Line System, and Façade Access Systems. The client’s priority was to maintain the highest level of safety whilst not impacting the aesthetics of the building design.
With over 290 apartments in the building, roof access is essential to carry out any planned preventative maintenance to the roof space and Façade.
The Solution
As you will see from the images above, the Guardrail is situated in the centre of the roof so that it cannot be seen from the ground and the safety line system sits outside of the Edge Protection to allow safe access close to the edge. The Freestanding Weighted Guardrail system allows operatives accessing the central roof space to do so without the need for a harness or attaching to the Safety Line System.
If operatives need to access the Façade of the building, they can open the safety gate and attach themselves to the Safety Line and then safely transfer themselves over to the Davit Arm – Rope Access System.
The Davit Arm Bases allow operatives to position the Davit Arm at different locations on the roof and ultimately access all faces of the building for cleaning and maintenance purposes. As well as the multiple Davit Bases, the design of the building also allowed for a discreet abseil rail system to be installed along the perimeter.
This mixture of solutions will provide operatives working at height with a safe way to access and manoeuvre the roof space, whilst not impacting the aesthetics of the development.
The Outcome
After the successful installation of all Work at Height systems, operatives now have the ability to access both the central roof space and the Façade safely, to carry out any necessary cleaning and maintenance.
