Working at height is dangerous and the authorities do not take this issue lightly, as one recent case shows. Last month, a firm was issued a fine in relation to an incident in which three of its staff members were spotted working on the roof of a Nottingham cash and carry store without using any safety equipment. A passing Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector saw the individuals risking their lives and reported the problem.
The firm involved pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety laws and was handed a fine of £14,000, as well as being ordered to pay legal costs.
According to the inspector who witnessed the incident, the three men did not have any safety gear, such as edge protection or special harnesses. They were replacing sky lights at the time, which is a particularly dangerous activity.
It was subsequently found that the work had been going on for three weeks before the individuals were spotted, meaning it was lucky that no accidents had occurred.
An HSE representative noted that falls from height are the biggest cause of workplace deaths in the UK.
