Featured Project

Client: Bowmer and Kirkland
Location: Jackson Row & Bootle Street, Manchester City Centre

Heightsafe were appointed by principal contractor Bowmer and Kirkland to deliver a bespoke Work at Height solution for St Michael’s — a major city centre redevelopment led by Relentless, Salboy, and KKR.

Tasked with designing a discreet and future-proof system for safe façade and roof access, Heightsafe specified a combination of Abseil Rail and Davit Arm Systems. Collaborating closely with long-term partner FallProtec, our team engineered a custom solution that integrated seamlessly with the building’s tiered, glass-fronted architecture.

The result: a safe, sustainable access system that supports long-term maintenance while preserving the development’s striking design.

What Our Clients Say

University of Cambridge

"I decided to once again use Heightsafe Systems due to my previous dealings with the company, and would again have no hesitation in employing them for future works. Once again they were efficient with a professional approach to H&S, which is critical in our line of work. The quality of work that was provided at a competitive cost was second to none, the communication, RAMS and Operatives on site were a credit to themselves."

Breyer Group

"We use Heightsafe Systems as they have a good reputation for all working at height requirements. I have carried out a number of repairs and renewals of small to large size roofs, from flat to pitch roofs, so the roofing construction methods and safety requirements are very familiar to myself. Heightsafe were professional, attentive to client needs, friendly when onsite and conducted themselves extremely well. The works carried out were to our time scales and the quality of work was good. The 3 things I would conclude from the install is that they were professional, provided a friendly service from start to finish and good workmanship when onsite. I would recommend HSS to any of my contractors."

CCG

"This year I have been very pleased with the service we have received from Heightsafe Systems, It’s been very useful to combine services much as the safety line testing and lightning conductor testing at our sites at Llangefni and Conwy. The combining of services makes life easier for myself as I don’t have to use different contractors for each service, It also helps to reduce costs. I have found the staff very easy to communicate with. I have had no issues with your Engineers and have found them all to be very helpful when onsite. Out of all the contractors we have at our five sites in the UK I would put Heightsafe first when it comes to RAMS, Whenever I have requested RAMS you have delivered them. This is really helpful as it doesn’t hold up works, this is not the case with many of our other contractors believe me!"

The Trade Centre

"We are very happy with the new Safety Line system that has been installed at one of The Trade Centre’s new showrooms. Heightsafe’s professionalism paired with their quick responses, services, and friendly staff are just what you will need. Additional information was also provided throughout the process, allowing for my own knowledge to grow."

XCELL Misting Ltd

"Our client’s Safety Line System was poorly installed by another company, resulting in compliance issues and delays for required maintenance tasks. Heightsafe’s operative team were extremely polite, courteous and knew exactly what was required. Our client is now confident for maintenance personnel to use the equipment whilst Working at Height."

Abbeymead Building Ltd

"Heightsafe were very knowledgeable and had all of the required knowledge to ensure compliance with Work at Height regulations, the project was expedited with efficiency and ease, providing a quality service for a competitive cost."

DS Smith

"I think the finished product is fantastic. It looks good, robust and like it will last a long time. The installation team were hardworking and very responsive to the needs of our installation. So from an overseeing and installation angle I was very pleased."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is classed as working at height?

Working at height includes any activity where a person could fall a distance capable of causing injury if suitable precautions were not in place. This can include work on roofs, ladders, platforms, fragile surfaces, façades and areas close to unprotected edges.

What Fall Protection System does my building need?

The most appropriate system depends on the building, tasks being completed, frequency of access and number of users. Collective protection such as guardrails should generally be considered before personal systems such as safety lines or anchors. A professional site survey can identify the most suitable approach.

What is the difference between fall restraint and fall arrest?

A fall restraint system is designed to prevent the user from reaching a location where a fall could occur. A fall arrest system allows the user to reach a fall-risk area but is designed to arrest the fall and reduce its consequences. Fall arrest systems require sufficient clearance and an effective rescue plan.

What are Façade Access Systems?

Façade Access Systems are permanent or temporary solutions that allow trained personnel to reach the external elevations of a building. They may include rope access anchors, davit arms, deadweight trolleys, eyebolts and Building Maintenance Units.

How often should Work at Height equipment be inspected?

Inspection frequencies depend on the equipment type, how it is used, manufacturer instructions and relevant standards. Many permanent systems are inspected at least annually, while personal protective equipment and frequently used systems may require more regular checks.

Can Heightsafe inspect an existing Fall Protection System?

Yes. Our Compliance Testing team can inspect existing Work at Height, Fall Protection, Roof Access and Façade Access equipment. We can identify defects, provide certification where appropriate and recommend remedial work where a system does not meet the required condition.

Can safety systems be installed on an existing building?

Yes. Many Fall Protection, Roof Access and Façade Access Systems can be retrofitted to existing buildings. A survey may be required to assess the structure, roof build-up, access arrangements and intended use before a system is designed.

Does Heightsafe work throughout the UK?

Yes. Heightsafe delivers site surveys, installation, testing, maintenance, training and specialist access services for clients throughout the UK.

Do you provide bespoke systems?

Yes. Our systems are designed around the requirements of each project. This may involve adapting standard products, combining several forms of protection or developing bespoke metalwork and access solutions.

Can Heightsafe support new construction projects?

Yes. We work with architects, developers and principal contractors during the design and construction stages. Early involvement allows Work at Height and Façade Access requirements to be coordinated with the building structure, roof design and future maintenance strategy.
