What does ‘Fall Arrest’ mean?
A Fall Arrest system will allow an operative working at height to reach a position where an accidental fall could happen. In the event of a fall, a Fall Arrest system will ensure that the worker will be caught before descending. It’s imperative that the system is positioned correctly to limit the consequences and distance of any potential fall.
In the event that it’s not possible to restrict an individual from falling (Fall Restraint), a Fall Arrest system should be in place along with a rescue plan for such an event.
What is the difference between Fall Restraint and Fall Arrest?
A Fall Restraint system will prevent the operative working at height, reaching potential fall hazards. A Fall Arrest system will allow the individual to reach a potential fall hazard and arrest (catch) the individual before descending.
A Fall Restraint system is the preferred choice for obvious reasons; however, this system may not be achievable due to various factors such as the roof type or area. As mentioned above, in this scenario a Fall Arrest system will be needed to provide the necessary safety precautions for individuals working at height.
