The Client
Chester Zoo celebrated it’s 90th birthday this year, and the zoo is now home to over 20,000 animals across 128 acres of zoological gardens. Heightsafe Systems have provided the world-renowned zoo’s compliance testing for years, and last month our teams visited to carry out their annual inspection.
With so many animals and plants to care for in addition to being the most visited zoo in the UK, our operatives ensure they carry out the testing without disturbing the zookeeper’s daily tasks, the visitors, or the animals in their homes.
The Brief
There are many systems utilised by the zookeepers and the zoos maintenance team to keep them safe when carrying out their duties in and around the animal enclosures, buildings and other areas of the zoo where working at height is necessary. Roof Access Systems and Fall Restraint Systems require testing annually in accordance with British Standards and Work at Height Legislation. This is to ensure all systems are in good repair and working as they should be if they are required to save someone from a fall.
The Solution
Heightsafe’s expert compliance team attended the zoo across five days, and tested over 80 systems and 150 metres of guardrail. The systems were spread out across the zoo, our teams attended all locations including the monsoon area, primate buildings, carnivore buildings, tsavo buildings, the elephants, and the bat house.
All systems were inspected, tested, and tagged, with recommendations for any remedial works noted.
The Outcome
Chester Zoo can now be confident in the knowledge that all their work at height systems have once again been tested by our team of professionals and their personnel will be safe when using them. Many of the systems are in or around animal enclosures or high up on building’s roofs so it is imperative the testing is completed annually and to the highest standard. Heightsafe’s asset management system, Prime, will send out reminders when annual testing is due, as well as giving all our clients the option to view and download all their asset information.
