Compliance Testing for P&O Cruises
The Client
P&O Cruises, founded in 1977 and based in Southampton, is a premier British cruise line with a rich maritime heritage dating back to the 1800s. Now operating as part of the global Carnival Corporation, P&O Cruises offers world-class voyages aboard seven modern ships, serving over 70 destinations around the globe.
To ensure the highest standards of safety for their crew and contractors working at height, P&O Cruises enlisted Heightsafe’s Contracts Team to carry out specialist compliance testing across their fleet. Due to the unique operational nature of cruise liners, meticulous coordination and flexibility were essential.
The Brief
P&O Cruises required statutory inspection, testing, and tagging of critical Work at Height Systems installed across two vessels in their fleet. These systems—used routinely by on-board maintenance personnel—included:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Kits
Ensuring these safety systems remain fully compliant is vital, particularly aboard vessels where access to infrastructure is more complex and often exposed to corrosive marine environments.
Fall Arrest Ladders, for example, are essential for safe vertical access and must be regularly checked for integrity and compliance. Similarly, Safety Line Systems act as a lifeline for those working in areas where guardrails and other collective protection systems cannot be deployed.
The Solution
Due to the vessels’ tight docking schedules—typically only spending a day or less in Southampton—Heightsafe developed a tailored, agile testing strategy to meet P&O’s operational and compliance requirements.
Our engineers strategically aligned testing with the ship’s itinerary, boarding in Tenerife during a scheduled port visit. From there, Heightsafe’s specialist team travelled with the vessel, conducting inspections and testing at various stops throughout the week. This approach maximised productivity and ensured minimal disruption to the ship’s operations.
By consolidating the compliance work into a single voyage, Heightsafe met the required SLA for system certification while reducing the need for multiple site visits, providing a more efficient and sustainable solution.
The Outcome
All Work at Height Systems on board were comprehensively inspected, tested, and appropriately tagged, in full accordance with regulatory standards. Systems found to be compromised—whether due to corrosion, bird damage, or environmental exposure—were promptly flagged and remediated by our engineers, ensuring they met compliance criteria before further use.
By completing the full scope of testing during a single operational cycle, Heightsafe delivered a cost-effective, time-sensitive solution tailored to the unique environment of maritime operations.
