Rope Access Compliance Testing at UCHL for CBRE

Client:

The Client

CBRE is the largest commercial real estate services and investment firm in the world. The firm offer services for both investors and developers and occupiers, through consultancy, facility and property management, leasing, investment management and capital markets.

One such building that CBRE manages is University College London Hospital, providing mechanical and electrical maintenance services for their buildings. UCLH is home to one of the UK’s two NHS Proton Beam centres, which is an advanced form of radiotherapy used to treat advanced and hard-to-treat cancers in children and adults.

The Brief

Heightsafe have worked with CBRE for many years, providing installation and testing services for a wide variety of buildings owned and managed by CBRE in the UK. UCLH has a multitude of work at height systems for various access requirements. In accordance with British Standards, those systems require compliance testing bi-annually to ensure they are compliant and safe for operatives to use.

The hospital offers many services in addition to Proton Beam Therapy, and so a heavy footfall of patients and staff meaning maintenance and cleaning works are essential and certain systems are required to carry out such maintenance.

The Solution

Our expert rope access technicians attended the hospital to complete works out of hours so as not to disrupt the hospital and the many patients and visitors it receives daily. In total, there were 5 safety line systems, 30 davit arm bases, 24 abseil tracks totalling over 130m of rail and 4 PPE harnesses for our team to inspect and test. Load testing was used to test the abseil rails, and davit bases have been pull-tested.

Rope Access methods were utilised to access many of the systems on the internal and external façade of the hospital that are otherwise inaccessible via traditional methods.

The Outcome

All systems were tagged and tested in accordance with current British Standards by our team of qualified compliance rope access technicians. All systems were noted to be in good working order, and so the maintenance personnel from CBRE attending the hospital can be confident they can carry out their work safely.
