The Client
Trafford General Hospital is often referred to as the birthplace of the NHS, after it was opened in 1948 by the then Health Secretary, Aneurin Bevan. What was then known as Park Hospital, served as the first NHS hospital after treating the first NSH patient.
More recently, the Accident and Emergency Unit has been closed and reduced to an Urgent Care Centre, forming part of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The site continues to provide care and treatment for a wide range of conditions to adults and children in the surrounding area.
The Brief
Heightsafe have years of experience within the healthcare sector, having completed Compliance Testing and Installation works on several hospitals and medical facilities across the UK.
Heightsafe were instructed to attend and carry out the annual Compliance Testing on all assets across the Trafford General Hospital site, which consists of Fire Escapes, Access Ladders, Guardrail and Step Over Units.
The Solution
Work at Height Systems must be tested at least once annually (or bi-annually if utilised for Fall Arrest or Restraint – BS EN 795 Class A1). Trafford General Hospital have a variety of Work at Height Systems on site, including 21 Step Over Units, 5 Fire Escape Staircases, 22 Access Ladders and almost 300 metres of Guardrail.
Each system has its own standard it needs to adhere to. Each system was thoroughly inspected and tested against the relevant standards by our dedicated Compliance Engineers. The systems were tested and any recommendations for remedial works were noted, and all provided in a report to the client.
The Outcome
The systems across the hospital are used by a variety of on-site maintenance personnel and external sub-contractors who require access to various areas of the roof and plant systems. It is imperative these systems are tested annually to ensure their safety for those utilising them for access.
Heightsafe’s engineers often complete testing with the site contact, explaining their work and the dangers of not having compliant systems. The Work at Height Systems at Trafford General Hospital have now undergone full Compliance Testing by our experts, and the Facilities team can be safe their systems are all up to date and in line with the relevant standards.
