One-of-a-kind Safety Line for Subsea Vessel
The Client
For more than 25 years, Enshore Subsea have specialised in the installation and protection of subsea infrastructure, making them one of the industry’s leading experts. Using advanced technology and bespoke machinery, they have installed and safeguarded thousands of kilometres of subsea cables and trenches.
With a highly skilled team of engineers and technicians, Enshore provide end-to-end project support — from planning and routing through to installation and ongoing maintenance — ensuring safe and efficient delivery for their clients worldwide.
The Brief
Among their specialist fleet, Enshore operate the CMOS Installer — a shallow-draft, highly manoeuvrable vessel designed for fibre optic cable laying. The ship houses a large cable drum structure that requires manning during operations at sea.
Due to the unpredictable nature of the North Sea, Enshore required a safe tethering solution to protect engineers working within this structure while cables were being deployed. Edge Protection alone would not provide sufficient safety, so a fixed, permanent Safety Line System was identified as the most effective solution.

The Solution
Heightsafe’s in-house design team developed a bespoke system comprising two separate Safety Lines. This configuration allows multiple engineers to work simultaneously without the risk of tangled lines, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted operations.
Engineers are able to clip onto the system whilst the vessel is in transit and actively deploying subsea fibre optic cables, providing constant fall protection in a challenging marine environment.
The Outcome
The Safety Line Systems — also known as Mansafe Systems — were installed while the CMOS Installer was docked at the Port of South Harbour in Northumberland. Working closely with Enshore, who pre-drilled the steel fixings, Heightsafe’s installation team completed the fitting, tensioning, and certification of the system, including full tagging for compliance.
This project is a true world-first — there is no other Safety Line installation of its kind anywhere across the globe. Heightsafe are proud to have delivered a fully bespoke solution, ensuring the safety of Enshore’s engineers both now and into the future.
