The Client
Culham Centre for Fusion Energy – CCFE – was opened in 1965 as a purpose-built home for Britain’s research efforts into fusion energy. It was created by the UK Atomic Energy Authority and constructed on the former airfield site of Royal Naval Air Station Culham.
The site is a major research facility, to this day collaborating with scientists from across the globe to harness the power of fusion energy in order to build the first reactor-scale experiment, to generate low-carbon electricity.
Also on the site is the Materials Research Facility – MRF – which examines and tests radioactive materials for the nuclear industry, and RACE – a robotics research and development facility, which assists with the nuclear fusion reactor project in addition to other activities such as driverless vehicles, augmented reality and autonomous systems.
The Brief
The facility recently had Photovoltaic Panels installed on the various roof spaces, and so a reliable system was needed to enable access to the panels, for the necessary maintenance, cleaning and upkeep of the systems.
Heightsafe were contacted to design and install a bespoke collection of Roof Access Systems to allow safe access onto and around the roof area to maintain the solar panels and other plant systems.
The Solution
Our in-house design team worked on a proposal to satisfy the needs of the client, and provided a bespoke design to cater to the specific roof build up and size of the structure.
It was determined that a combination of an Access Ladder, Fixed Guardrail and a Safety Line System would be the best option for the project.
The Outcome
Heightsafe supplied, installed and certified the Aluminium Access Ladder to BS 4211, 160m of Rivet Fixed Guardrail in accordance with BS EN 13374-2013 Class A, and a Safety Line System to BS EN 795 Class C.
Our engineers are experience and qualified in all manner of Work at Height Systems and ensure every element has been tested to the relevant British Standard.
Operatives at the site will now be able to easily access the roof area to carry out the necessary cleaning and maintenance tasks that are required by the client.
