The Client
The new Holiday Inn and IBIS hotels at Manchester Airport are currently in the final stage of construction, ahead of their planned opening dates of September 2022. The two new hotels are situated on an island site, immediately opposite Terminal 2 and will provide direct navigation into the terminal itself.
Both hotels are part of a £45 million project aimed at supporting the predicted passenger growth at the airport in the coming years. The Holiday Inn will have a new full-service restaurant that has been designed to attract guests from both hotels.
The Brief
Heightsafe were contacted by the client to design, supply, install and certify a Roof Access Ladder and Step Over Unit to provide operatives working at height with a safe way to access and manoeuvre the roof space.
With over 250 rooms in each hotel, roof access is essential to carry out any planned preventative maintenance to the machinery situated on the roof. The roof contains multiple obstacles in the form of cable tracks and plumbing for the air conditioning units that need to be avoided, and so a Step Over Unit was the ideal solution in order to fit around the existing components on the roof.
The Solution
Following the initial site survey to obtain measurements and possible obstructions the installation team may face, Heightsafe fabricated a bespoke Roof Access Ladder and Step Over Unit to provide the necessary safe access.
As you will see from the images below, due to the height of the machinery in question and the narrow roof space, a Step Over Unit was the perfect solution to provide Roof Operatives with the necessary clear space to operate within.
Our team of qualified engineers installed the Step Over Unit and Access Ladder, and tested them to current British Standard Regulations.
The Outcome
After the successful installation of both the Roof Access Ladder and the Step Over Unit, all Roof Operatives will have the ability to access and manoeuvre the roof in a safe manner, in order to carry out various maintenance tasks.
