The Client
Inovyn, a subsidiary of INEOS, is Europe’s leading producer of vinyls with over 4000 employees across 15 European manufacturing sites. Their Runcorn site focuses mainly on the production of chlorine, caustic soda, and chlorinated derivatives, with one of the larges electrolysis units in Europe. The chemicals produced are utilised across many industries such as building and construction, water, electronics, and pharmaceuticals.
The Brief
Heightsafe were asked to provide a Fall Protection solution across the roof spaces of Inovyn’s Runcorn site. Our engineers worked with the site manager to coordinate the removal of temporary edge protection on the roof to replace it and install bespoke side fixed guardrail across their office and ancillary buildings.
The Solution
The site required edge protection to allow safe access and use of the roof spaces, and so a bespoke fixed guardrail solution was the best choice for Inovyn. The site has existing temporary guardrail, but a permanent, aesthetically pleasing solution was required. Heightsafe’s skilled engineers utilised mobile man anchors and set up temporary safety lines to ensure their safety while removing and installing the edge protection on the exposed roof edge.
A total of 241 metres of fixed guardrail was installed to the steelwork parapet of the office building roof, as well as freestanding guardrail surrounding the 3 access hatches complete with self-closing gates. A further 114 metres of fixed guardrail was installed to the ancillary building roof parapet with freestanding guardrail surrounding the access hatch on the roof space.
The Outcome
All guardrail was inspected and tested to BS 13700:2021 and BS EN 13374:2013+A1:2018 to ensure the system is safe and complies with current British Standards. Inovyn now has a complete fall protection solution on their roof spaces which guarantees edge protection for maintenance, cleaning, and any other duties that require access to the roof. The system provides a permanent solution that is in keeping with the modern, sleek building.
Our team utilised mobile man anchors to install the guardrail, the benefits being that they can be picked up, moved, and set up in different areas on the roof.
