The Client
A globally renowned British multinational retail corporation established in 1919, Now one of the world’s largest and most influential retail chains. Operating both online and through a vast network of physical stores, this retail chain is known for its innovation, customer-centric approach, and commitment to sustainability.
Recently, they opened a new superstore in Edge Hill, and Heightsafe was entrusted with the task of designing and installing a bespoke collection of Roof Access Systems to ensure safe access for maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep of plant systems.
The Brief
With the opening of the new superstore in Edge Hill, they needed a reliable system that would allow for safe and efficient access to the roof area. The primary objective was to ensure that plant systems on the roof could be properly maintained and serviced. To meet these requirements, Heightsafe was tasked with designing and implementing a comprehensive roof access solution.
The Solution
Heightsafe’s dedicated in-house design team embarked on crafting a solution tailored to the specific roof build-up and size of the Edge Hill superstore. After careful consideration, it was determined that a combination of specialised components would be ideal for the project. The solution included:
Slimline Weighted Guardrails: Heightsafe supplied, installed, and certified 10 linear metres of Slimline Weighted Guardrail. This guardrail system offers collective protection for users and is constructed with galvanised steel weighted feet. Uprights are spaced at a maximum of 3 metres and the guardrail is designed to provide a vertical height of 1100mm. All components adhere to BS EN13374:2013 and BS6399 standards.
UPVC Walkways: 4 linear metres of Heightsafe Systems UPVC walkways were installed. This walkway, made from recycled PVC compound with an anti-slip surface, serves as a demarcation route to guide workers away from potential fall risks. Handrails are included on both sides of the walkway.
KeeWalk Walkways: A total of 36 linear metres of 600mm wide KeeWalk walkways were implemented. Kee Walk offers a safe, anti-slip, level walkway designed for roof access. It protects the roof surface from damage and evenly distributes pedestrian loads. The walkway is suitable for various roof systems and is installed to BS EN 516:2006 standards.
KeeGuard Topfix Galvanised Steel Fixed Guardrail: 53 linear metres of KeeGuard Topfix galvanised steel fixed guardrail were employed. This system provides collective protection for users, featuring a top rail, mid-rail, and an overall height of 1100mm. Uprights are spaced at a maximum of 3 metres with a design load of 0.3kN. All components conform to BS EN 13374-2013 Class A standards.
The Outcome
The implementation of these Roof Access Systems ensures that the Edge Hill Superstore can perform necessary maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep of its plant systems safely and effectively. Heightsafe’s experienced and qualified engineers rigorously test each element to meet British Standards, guaranteeing the utmost safety for their maintenance personnel.
