HVI Lightning Protection System Installation

Client:

The Client

Our client, a high-profile manufacturing site in Scotland, produces highly flammable and explosive materials for customers around the world. As a global provider of aluminium effect pigments that are used across automotive paints, inks, and various plastics, it is important that the site is safe against the effects of a lightning strike, if one were to ever occur.

They have manufacturing and sales locations across the globe, and Heightsafe were contacted to provide a Lightning Protection Solution for their Scotland site.

The Brief

Lightning strikes can have a devastating impact, especially where materials of a flammable and explosive nature are concerned. Our client produces such materials and so operates within an ATEX zone. DSEAR 2002 Regulations also stipulate that any risks that could occur due to substances that are explosive or corrosive to metals must have suitable protection in place to control the risks.

Heightsafe have an expert, ATLAS accredited Lightning Protection Division, who were asked to design a system to cater to these regulations and provide protection should a Lightning strike occur.

The Solution

Our team designed, supplied, installed, and tested a bespoke HVI (High-Voltage-Resistant Insulated) system, complete with down conductors and earth termination network; with components supplied by DEHN. The system complies with both DSEAR 2002 and ATEX Regulations, providing complete protection in the event of a Lightning strike.

Lightning Protection System Earthing Rods at Silberline

Our engineers completed all civil engineering works on site, drilling through concrete to get down to softer ground and install the earth rods. A MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) was used to access higher level system components, and a Surge Arrest System was supplied to be fitted in accordance with Part 4 of BS EN 62305:2012.

The Outcome

Heightsafe’s team of engineers worked closely with our site contact, and ensured all works were completed with ease. Despite some challenges due to difficult ground conditions, our engineers had the experience and expertise to overcome them.

The system in place now ensures the site is protected in the event of a strike, which is especially important due to the nature of the items manufactured there.
